Once you start the payment process, you will need to be ready to upload your properly prepared images for the categories you select and pay for.
Don't worry – if you want to enter additional categories, you can return, login and enter more whenever you like.
THE FILE NAME
If you shoot Jpeg files, please ensure that your camera is set to record the maximum Jpeg quality possible.
Upload your submission in the form of low-res Jpegs to the competition website along with your email address and daytime telephone number.
If you are shortlisted we will contact you and ask you to send a print of your image (maximum size approx 12x16in) with a hi-res Tiff file. Full details will be given and there will be no extra fee.
1. WHO CAN ENTER
1.1 The Black+White Photographer of the Year Competition (“The Competition”) is open to both UK and overseas readers of Black+White Photography magazine.
1.2 Employees of GMC Publications Ltd (“Promoters”) and their families and The Competition sponsors and their families are not eligible to enter.
1.3 Amateur, student and professional photographers, resident in the UK or abroad, of any age, are eligible to enter.
1.4 Entrants aged under 18 on the closing date must have the permission of their parent/guardian to enter. The Promoter reserves the right to request proof of this permission.
2. THE CATEGORIES
2.1 The Competition categories are: Black+White Photographer of the Year; This is Life; The Human Spirit; The Living World; Young Black+White Photographer of the Year.
2.2 For the title of Black+White Photographer of the Year you must enter three photographs. For all other categories you can enter one or more photographs.
2.3 The Young Black+White Photographer of the Year category is open to entrants aged 25 or under at the closing date for entries (23 September, 2012).
2.4 Entrants may enter as many categories as they like.
3. HOW TO ENTER
3.1 Entries to all categories must be sent as Jpeg files only, and uploaded on the competition website: www.bpoty.co.uk.
3.2 Jpeg attachments must be saved at quality level 7 to 9, 72dpi, RGB, and the image must be a maximum of 900pixels on the longest side (which equates to around
13 inches at 72dpi).
3.3 Add your own name and the category entered to the file name, plus daytime phone number and email address.
3.4 Go to the competition website, www.bpoty.com, pay the fees for the categories you wish to enter and then upload the images. By submitting images you are agreeing that you have read, understood and agreed to the terms and conditions of entry.
3.5 Please note that total image file attachment(s) must not exceed 1.5Mb per upload.
3.6 The closing date for entries is midnight on Sunday, 23 September 2012.
3.7 Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed.
3.8 No responsibility is taken for lost, delayed, misdirected or incomplete entries. Proof of delivery of the entry is not proof of receipt.
4. REACHING THE SHORTLIST
4.1 Entrants who make it to the shortlist will be contacted by us and asked to submit a print and a high resolution Tiff file of their shortlisted picture. Full details will be given when we contact you. There will be no
extra fee.
5. ENTRY FEE
5.1 Entry for the category of Black+White Photographer of the Year 2012 is £10. You can enter this category more than once, at a cost of £10 per entry. For each entry you must submit three pictures.
5.2 For all other categories, entry is £5 for up to three images. You may submit the same image to other categories, but must pay £5 for each category.
5.3 The entry fee is payable by credit card, debit card, or PayPal account only. Full payment details are on the competition website: www.bpoty.com.
5.4 For entrants below the age of 18, entry is free.
6. COPYRIGHT & REPRODUCTION
6.1 All images submitted must be the entrant’s own work, must not be copied, must not contain any third party materials including third party trademarks or trade names and/or content that you do not have permission to use.
All images submitted must not otherwise be obscene, defamatory or in breach of any applicable UK legislation or regulations. If the Promoter has reason to believe your entry is not the entrant’s own work or otherwise breaches these terms and conditions, then the entrant’s image will not be considered.
Images must not previously have been published in a national UK photography magazine, nor have won any national-level photography competition.
Copyright of all entries remains with the photographer at all times, but the Promoter and the sponsors of the Competition and their associated group companies reserve the right to use, publish and republish entries in connection with the Competition, without payment.
6.2 By entering this Competition the entrant grants permission to the Promoter and sponsors and their associated group companies to reproduce the entrant’s photos in any media (including without limitation on the BPOTY website or in Black+White Photography magazine) whether or not the image is selected as a winning entry of any of the categories.
6.3 The entrant of a winning entry of one of the Competition Categories including the Young Black+White Photographer of the Year and Overall Winner categories grants the Promoter and sponsors the right to use their name and town or city of residence for the sole purpose of identifying them as the author of the winning image(s).
6.4 The entrant must be the sole author and owner of copyright.
6.5 It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure they comply with ownership and copyright requirements.
6.6 It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure they have the relevant model releases and licences, where required.
6.7 The organisers and sponsors of the Black+White Photographer of the Year Competition reserve the right to free reproduction and publication of entered images, but only in connection with this competition.
7. JUDGING
7.1 Entries will be judged on style, creativity, originality, technical execution and presentation. Tiff files and prints will be requested from all shortlisted entries.
7.2 The winners of the Black+White Photographer of the Year Competition will be determined by the judges in accordance with the competition rules.
7.3 The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
7.4 Judging will take place in October 2012, with the winners announced in the Winter 2012 issue of Black+White Photography magazine (issue 145), on sale 29 November 2012. The winners will also be announced on the website.
7.5 No correspondence will be entered into prior to notifying the winners and publishing the winning entries.
7.6 The judges reserve the right not to award a prize if the required standard is deemed not to have been reached.
7.7 The prizes are as stated, and no cash alternative is available.
7.8 Prize value is correct at time of going to press. Prizes in the form of products, services or experiences are subject to availability. The sponsors of each category have the right to substitute the prize for a similar item of equal or higher value if the stated prize is not available. No money can be added to the overall prize.
7.9 Prizes are subject to the sponsor’s or supplier’s standard terms and conditions.
GENERAL
8.1 The Promoter or sponsors or their associated group companies shall not be liable for any loss, damage or injury of any nature howsoever caused, sustained by any entrant under this Competition. However, nothing in these terms and conditions shall have the effect of excluding or restricting liability for personal injury, death, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation caused by the proven negligence of employees or agents of the Promoter or sponsors or their associated group companies.
8.2 The sponsors or suppliers shall not be liable for any failure to supply the prizes where such failure is caused by any supervening circumstances outside their control which amount to force majeure and which without the fault of either party renders performance impossible or incapable of satisfactory execution.
8.3 The Promoter reserves the right to void, amend, and/or change the rules of the Competition or these terms and conditions at any time without incurring any liability whatsoever.
8.4 Where applicable any data captured during the course of the promotion will be collated, accessed, processed and stored wholly in accordance with applicable UK Data Protection Laws and Regulations. The Promoter will use reasonable endeavours to ensure no data will be transmitted to, or processed or stored by third party organisations (other than the sponsors or their associated companies in connection with this Competition) or transmitted outside the EEA.
8.5 If entrants do not wish for their contact information to be used for marketing purposes or to enable the Promoter or sponsors to contact them in future regarding similar competitions or sponsors’ promotions, they should make this clear in their entry email.
8.6 Submitting entries to the Black & White Photographer of the Year Competition constitutes acceptance of these terms and conditions.
8.7 Entries that do not comply with these terms and conditions will be rejected.
8.8 These terms and conditions are governed by English law and any dispute in relation to them shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
